STAYING STRONG: AN INTERVIEW WITH CELINE DION

Power of Love: At the Request of Her Husband, Celine Dion Returns to the Stage

When Céline Dion stepped aside last year to care for her ailing husband, René Angélil, after he was diagnosed with throat cancer, her show-business career was put on hold indefinitely. Now, the international superstar is back in the spotlight at The Colosseum.

“It’s going to be for him. I want to make him see me strong again,” she told reporters backstage at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas of her return to the Caesars Palace stage. “We wanted to come back. This is what we’ve done best together, so let’s still do it together. He wants me back. He wants me out there.”

You’ve always said, “family comes first.” How difficult has the last year been? Sickness is difficult for all family members, but I have enjoyed concentrating on being a wife and a mother this past year. That was my priority.

Why is now the right time to return? It was René. He wanted to see me back onstage. He helped me to feel better about going back to performing and still be able to care for him and the kids.

Are you excited? Indeed. I am excited to get back to perform onstage in front of my loyal fans.

What does the stage represent to you? There is something magical about the stage. I love that part of my life. I love the live aspect of it. The moments created live between myself and the audience are incredible.

What can we expect in terms of stage production and visuals with your new show? I have some new band members, and I still have the orchestra. I do not want to give more of the show; I will only say that the new visuals will be outstanding. There will be surprises for my fans.

You’ve been performing in Las Vegas since 2003. Did you ever think you’d be approaching your 1,000th show here? I love performing in Las Vegas. When I first came here, they said I would never last. I hope to keep performing here as long as the fans allow.

How long will that be? As long as I’m able to sing and perform. It’s part of my DNA.

When you have time to relax and unwind, what do you do for yourself? Being with my family is my favorite thing. That’s what gives me the most joy.
